Podcast 4: Larry Boles clarifies aspects of the Rift System

by on Jul.19, 2010, under Blog, Podcast

This last week has seen a nice amount of information. Just a bit to sooth our thirst for knowledge about the game.

Our interview today is with Larry Boles, a content designer who works on the rift systems themselves.

He talks to us about his experience in content design to what aspects of the game he likes the most as well as which one of the rifts he favours over others.

Larry clears up some misconceptions about the rift system, such as what entering a rift means – when we enter a rift we simply enter into the altered landscape the rift has created, and not into any sort of an instance. The rifts, at least at this point in time, do not create an instance for us to go into. Rifts completely alter the landscape they cover, and it is that modified area we enter into when a rift spawns.

He also goes over rifts and their viability for solo and group play as well as leveling. Larry gives us an overview of what dynamic content encompasses and what it could mean for the genre.

Onto the News

The third guardian race will be revealed at Gamescom in Cologne Germany, August 2010.

There will also be a playable demo of Rift: Planes of Telara at both Gamescom and PAX, in Seattle in September 2010. Don’t we all wish we could be there!

A lot of articles and interviews have popped up this week. Though these have shed little new light on the information we have, they’ve all been a definite good read and are worth looking up.

Scott Hartsman has a great interview about classes and callings with TenTonHammer. There’s also an article at GamesRadar.

MMOGamer has an interview with both Cindy ‘Abigale’ Bowens and Russ Brown. It’s a good interview and shows how important community is to them.

The Telara Chronicles, a Rift: Planes of Telara comic was released for pre-order this week as well. There is an interview about it over at: Newsarama. This interview also covers the comic about one of Trion World’s other games in development: End of Nations.

Our favourite article of the week can be found at: UK PCGamer. It shows us some great new screenshots we’ve not seen before and Scott Mentions the reasoning behind why they chose to go with 5 man groups instead of 6. It’s a great read – go look.

The last Friday IRC Dev Chat with Lead Environment artist Brian Clarke answered a whole lot of questions, which can be found at Telara Central as usual.

Don’t forget to visit Telarapedia. It’s updated accurately and frequently. If you feel you have anything to contribute, you should. It’s a great fan site project.

Next week we’ll have Abi sit down and chat with us about her day to day life in the Trion offices. She’s also going to talk to us about playing the game and how some of the information we know of applies in an in game setting.

Thank you all for listening, and we hope you enjoy the 4th podcast.

Thanks for the podcast, Ari and Desi! I’m sure quite a few people appreciate the effort and time you put into them – keep it up.

Still, I wish they could say more about the rifts. I’m still not quite clear how they are different from public quests (well he covers that to a degree), but we’ll all find out one day!

Please bring back the direct MP3 download. I am going into the office tomorrow and I was going to listen to your cast on the way to work. Now Yak can’t do that, damn it. :( Please ring back the mp3 download, thanks!

But it’s still there, hon :( The Current Episode on the right hand side lets you just right click to save as – so you should be able to just right click to save as. I just tried it and it worked for me – sorry for the inconvenience.

Hope you get to listen to it

Ahh it’s you girls who did the Aion podcasts… (yeah, sorry, late arriver lol).

Those were nice, but I wasnt too impressed with the way you just seemed to fade out of sight with them when you got obviously dissapointed with that game (not that I blame you lol).

Make me a promise and I will stay… no more slinking off! ;)

    • Arithion

Hi hi :) I remember you!

No, no slinking off. With Rift we have amazing community support from the actual game staff – it’s awesome. We were going to do a farewell one for Aion but … just never got around to it :( Sorry!

We’re going to be here for a looooong time ;)

      • Vesavius

It’s cool, nps, Aion was a car crash for me personally anyhow. I didnt last much past you tbh. Very excited for this game though and thoroughly trust Scott and his team to deliver a solid, innovative and fun game. Will you be putting a guild together this time?

        • Arithion

I’m probably just going with my old guild, but I think Desi was contemplating making a guild – just not right now :) Going to wait until closer to release.

  • Roonie

Love the podcasts. It was great how Ari and Desi both coo when Larry says ‘air rift’.
