Podcast 6: Interview with Paladin class creator: Joshua Kurtz

by on Aug.02, 2010, under Blog, Podcast

So, just like the title says, we sat down with Joshua Kurtz and bombarded him with Paladin related questions.

First up, he tells us a bit about himself and how he came to work at Trion. Then he goes into the Paladin class in quite a bit of detail. From what his ideal of the class was on creation and how closely the end product actually resembles the initial plan – to a Paladin’s strengths and weaknesses.

He’s very adamant about the class being a protector and not necessarily a holy warrior.

It was a lot of fun to chat with Joshua – he even answered a couple of fun questions for us, including: Who would win in a fight – a Reaver or a Paladin.

We’d like to thank him for his time.

Cindy joins us again – and talks to us briefly about the Newsletter’s Beta key chances announcement.

There will be a special extra podcast episode about half way through the week, which will address many questions about the plan for beta from the community on the Official Forums. Don’t forget to add your questions!

Another nice meaty show with good info :)

I am a little bit confused about the Pally though… I mean, I get his role, and thats fine, but not getting where he sits in the lore… He is not a agent of the gods, yet he has ‘holy powers’?

Anyhoo… good job, will be back for the mid week special ;)

    • Arithion

I think that the Paly can be holy – but that he’s first and foremost a protector of the weak – and therefore his power comes from a belief in that role for himself.

But that’s just how I understood it. I’m known for being slightly insane ;)

  • Vesavius

    yay for the insane :D

I think it was Josh’s specific use of ‘holy’ that confused me… it just seemed to be at odds with other stuff that was said.

Ahh well, nothing thats gonna stop rolling the class. It sounds an awesome base soul to throw things on top of.

Thanks for letting us pick your brain Kurtz. It is going to be interesting to actually start playing with all these fun classes and systems we have heard about.

And of course Abigale, thanks for the support of the podcast. It is definitely a wonderful way to get the community and the development together.

And as always – Great Job Arithion and Desikis

Sounds like I might like this type of paladin over the other types I’ve seen in other games.

The more I hear about this soul business. It sounds a lot like the Dual-Class system in Runes of Magic…only better.

    I could be wrong though.

      :)
Well Gamescom and PAX should give us a wealth of information, so I’m truly looking forward to both of those

The Paladin archetype is one of those staples in fantasy settings that’s grown so stale and formulaic that I tend to shy away from playing them in most titles. It’s nice to hear that Trion will be taking a somewhat divergent path with them and that they won’t amount to just a means of getting a free horse for absolutely no reason other than sticking to that formula.

    At any rate, excellent podcast!

    • Arithion

      Thank you :)

Yeah, I’m really excited about the way they’re doing the pally – though I probably won’t play one as my main, I think I might alt it ;)
