Great podcast as always gang. Hopefully Trion will pump out an authenticator shortly.

    Nice podcast! loven it!

I haven’t been hacked yet, but three of my guild buddies have been. My friend got hacked a couple of hours ago. )= It logged off only for like 2 hours and they hit him.

As always I enjoyed the podcast. I do have a few thoughts which, in my idleness at work I thought i’d share.

Something which I feel wasn’t really addressed or considered perhaps is that the issues with account security really have quite little to do with Trion. They can really only do so much about this. Most of what’s lacking is user-end security, and Trion can’t go around and make sure each individual’s computer is safe.

You also have to consider that the reason account hacking is so much worse here than say, in WoW is that this game is 6-7 years newer. Do you really think these hackers, who have made a living off of this, are using the same 7 year old techniques? No. These people are established, funded and have years of experience on account hacking below their belt.

Furthermore the number of casual players who undoubtedly get frustrated that they can’t afford whatever epic item on the auction houses, ensures that these hackers have plenty of clients to cater to. Rift, unlike AoC, WAR, FFXIV, has done a very good job of enticing more than just the fanboy, hardcore mmo players. It’s a double edged sword of sorts.

Trion had the foresight to include the spam blocker functions, not just in chat but for mail as well from launch. That’s more than I can say for any other recent mmo. There are lots of hackers, true but there are also lots more players here than in other recent titles, and it’s a fresh market for hackers to move their services to.

These are all important things to consider before voicing complaints that this is something Trion has done, like forgetting to flip the switch that activates the magical-no-hackers firewall, which allows only those users who are pure of heart to play.

Here is the thing with the number of accounts hacked. Its not just people that buy plat, its everyone who has ever fallen for a fake email for any game. The hackers have huge databases of every account and password from every game they have attacked. On day 1 they will hit a new game with every single one of those account name and passwords. Its a huge problem for Trion just on server load on the login server, let alone the actual sucessful hacks.
